How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019)
Around June of 2023, Batu (John Powell’s assistant) informed me that Universal would release an expanded soundtrack for How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. Powell wanted to release the companion book the same day. Even though all of the cues were orchestrated in a notation program, there was still a mountain of work to get the music publish-ready. Fortunately, my friends and colleagues, Thomas Hakanson and Joel Kremeiyer-Kelly were able to prep the files. Even with the files prepped, it still took three months to polish so that customers could enjoy the same layout and attention to detail they’ve come to expect. As always, Batu Sener was an immense help making sure the book was to John’s exacting standards.
John Powell completes the trilogy in tremendous fashion, writing no less than seven themes themes and various motifs. With each successive film, Powell figures out new ways to express himself while still telling a cohesive story. The leap from the 2nd film to the 3rd in terms of music reveals a stark difference, having honed his choral and orchestral skills writing his Prussian Requiem and working with John Williams on Solo in the interim. All in all, the dragon trilogy frames a decade of film music and now fans of the franchise can see how the music has evolved in this ten year period as the composer’s style matured.
